ANSO Honors recognize members’ contributions to the organization and mission. ANSO Awards recognize the achievements of Service members (including students in the U.S. Service Academies) and civilians (including veterans and members of the Department of Defense workforce) who embody high professional standards and uphold the ANSO core values of leadership, excellence, and dedication in their commands and local communities.
ANSO HONORS
Presented by the Board of Directors (BOD) to recognize the dedication and contributions of members or chapters to the association and the Hispanic community:
1. LEADERSHIP AND EXCELLENCE:
Recognizes an ANSO national BOD member who shows sustained dedication to leadership and vision towards ANSO’s spirit and intent, and a firm personal commitment to ANSO’s mission.
2. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT:
Recognizes an ANSO member who has served honorably and with dedication for a specified period of 20 years or more.
3. OUTSTANDING CHAPTER PROGRAM:
Recognizes the Chapter with the most outstanding overall program and engagement.

ANSO AWARDS
ANSO Awards are open to members and non-members. The five ANSO awards are:
1. “EL BUEN TIMONEL” OR “GOOD HELMSMAN” AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP:
This award will have the Junior Enlisted and U.S. Service Academies categories. The award will be presented yearly to junior enlisted (E3 to E6) and current students in the U.S. Service Academies. Chapters may submit applications for reservists or those who have transitioned honorably from these pay grades to civilian.
This award recognizes the leadership demonstrated by the individual as a “Good Helmsman” or “Buen Timonel” by displaying high professional standards in their line of service, maintaining personal toughness and readiness, and mentors people of all ranks, as well as our Youth, with generosity. 2. “LA CRESTA DE LA OLA” OR “THE CREST OF THE WAVE” AWARD FOR PERSISTENT COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE:
This award will have the Junior Officer and Civilian categories. The award will be presented yearly to active duty and reserve junior officers (O1 to O4) and civilians (GS5 to GS 12). Chapters may submit nominations on behalf of civilians who have transitioned or honorably retired from these pay grades.
This award recognizes a service member who through a continuous commitment to personal and professional improvement, contributes to a transformative command readiness force, and is actively involved in ANSO’s mission. To stay on “the Crest of the Wave” requires mastery and persistence. 3. “CONTRA VIENTO Y MAREA” OR “AGAINST ALL ODDS” AWARD FOR CONSISTENT DEDICATION:
This award will have the Senior Enlisted, Senior Officer, and Senior Civilian categories. This award will be presented to active duty and reserve Senior Enlisted leaders (E7 and above), Senior Officers (O5 or above), and Senior Civilians (GS13 or above). Chapters may submit nominations on behalf of civilians who have transitioned or honorably retired from these pay grades.
The “Against all Odds” award celebrates the contributions of our senior leaders to our nation, to the Armed Forces, and to the Hispanic community. Those who reach senior positions in leadership encounter many challenges and overcome obstacles serving as beacons of hope to their mentees. 4. “PENSAR MAS ALLA” OR “THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX” AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN THE ART OF WAR:
This award will be presented to active duty and reserve Service Members who display a spirit of innovation reflected in better thinking inside (leveraging given resources) and outside (recognizing better ways to implement resources and modify) the box, “pensando y creando más allá de los límites.” This award celebrates the innovating drive common in the Hispanic American mindset and closely connected to the American spirit. 5. “PRIMERA CLASE” OR “FIRST RATE” AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN OPERATIONAL COMPETENCE:
This award will be presented to active duty and reserve Service Members who display problem solving abilities and represent our Core Values; exemplifying strong Operational Planning and Problem Solving skills in the execution of respective duties. The term First Rate denotes excellence and was attributed to the ships with the most capabilities and outstanding performance during maritime battles.
